Every year since Father’s Day began, children (and wives) have struggled to figure out what gift dad would like best on Father’s Day. Most of the time, dad usually ends up with the traditional ‘socks and jocks’, or maybe a power tool, or some other gizmo for his workshed. Whereas Mother’s Day can be an easy shopping experience with all the flowers, bath oils and chocolates that flood the market at that time, there’s a natural limit to the amount of underwear and screwdrivers a man can own.
One novel idea, but an idea also steeped in tradition, is to write a poem for dad on Father’s Day. It’s not as nerdy as it sounds. You don’t need to get all sentimental with it, just mention that you love him forever, and throw some funny bits in too.
Worried that you’re not a poet? Don’t be. Have a think about your dad – what makes him laugh or cry, what makes him mad and what makes him happy. Start making a list. Then start remembering some funny times you’ve had in the last year. Perhaps these will be crazy things your dad has done, mistakes he may have made, the time the dog chewed up his favorite golf shoes, or when dad was home alone and tried to boil an egg in the microwave. And get creative too. Make some stuff up. Your dad won’t mind!
Throw in some sporting references or the abiding love your dad has for his car or his boat. Talk about fishing trip exaggerations or that awesome poker hand he got that cleaned out his mates.
Once you have all your material, you’ll probably find the inspiration you need and the words will begin to flow. If you have siblings, get them in on the writing process too. Many heads are better than one, and you’ll soon find you’re having a blast as the ideas come thick and fast. If you ever get stuck, don’t be afraid to turn to the internet. There are many sites out there that provide rhymes if you’re ever stuck on a word.
No matter what it takes to get it written, your Father’s Day poem must be written with the heart as well as the mind. As well as the words themselves, the gift here is the time and love you’ve put into the poem. Your dad will recognize that straight away. You can see the grin on his face already, can’t you? Get started on your Father’s Day poem now.
